Lorde drops the ‘Fallen Fruit’ MV to call out environmental destruction - SCOUT

OCTOBER 27, 2022

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Lorde’s “Solar Power” tracklist is the apocalyptic OST we never knew we needed. And it seems that the artist knows that too, if her latest visuals for “Fallen Fruit” are anything to go by.

Freshly dropped today, Nov. 3, the music video for her recent album’s fifth track sees the Kiwi singer in her natural habitat—by a sandy seashore, as previously seen on the title track’s own MV. But while “Solar Power” saw “Midsommar”-esque festivities with an all-around carefree energy, “Fallen Fruit” cuts into several shots of Lorde’s environment now in ruins, burning as she walks an empty path.

“In the ‘Solar Power’ video, you were introduced to the island as a lush paradise—glistening water, blue skies, not a grain of sand out of place (barring that pesky beach trash…),” she writes in her newsletter. “Cut to: humans doing as they do, getting greedy, treating the land with disrespect and stripping it of its beauty. There’ll always [be] another pristine place to start again, right?”

“The gardens that were once lush and fruitful are now on fire. The fishing boats are busted up and overturned. All that’s left of the peaches are their pits. Amid all that, my character makes a choice.”

In a convo with Scout and other media outlets, Lorde mentions that “Solar Power” was a reflection of her growing awareness of her personal climate footprint. While she wouldn’t consider the album’s tracks to have any “strong messages” about environmentalism, she’s still placing bits of the cause in the little things she does—starting from her “eco-conscious” music box, and apparently, now down to the “Fallen Fruit” visuals. (And to that, we say, we gotta stan.)
