PH now has its first PhD in artificial intelligence and it’s being offered at UP - SCOUT

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Do your formative years involve spending an unhealthy amount of hours (re)watching “Blade Runner,” “The Matrix,” “Ex Machina,” and the peak of cinema a.k.a. “Wall-E”? Good news, because it will finally make sense.

University of the Philippines – Diliman’s Artificial Intelligence Program Facebook page unveiled the anatomy of their PhD in AI program last Saturday, July 30. It carries the goal of producing professionals with a scientific mindset, technical skills, and professional perspective in developing the field of AI.

The doctoral degree, which is under the university’s National Graduate School of Engineering, is focused on “problem identification and understanding, obtaining a strong familiarity with state-of-the-art solutions, formulation of novel algorithms and techniques, and deployment of suitably advanced and highly reliable AI systems.”

If you’re an AI-focused practitioner, researcher, or academic hoping to gain credentials to offer AI programs in your own university or college, qualifications and requirements have already been posted. But before accomplishing them, you need to choose from their program options: Option A – a Masters in Engineering-PhD program for those who’ve taken a related bachelor’s degree, Option B – a PhD program for those who’ve taken a related master’s degree, without thesis; and Option C – a PhD program for those who’ve taken a related master’s degree, with thesis.

Once you pass the screening of your chosen track, expect to explore complex (and equally interesting) study areas like machine learning and autonomous robots, among other subjects in the coursework. You can also take electives like machine learning in natural language processing and quantum computing for AI.

Rates and admission periods for options B and C have yet to be announced. Meanwhile, the university started accepting option A applications on Aug. 1, and will close submissions on  Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. For more information on how to get the most exciting PhD to date, head to their Facebook page.
