At 29 years old, Sean Anthony is at the top of his game, both on and off the court.
The Filipino-Canadian was raised in Vancouver, but moved to the Philippines back in 2010 to join the Philippine Basketball Association.
Last year, the 6’4” athlete got married to Eurasian supermodel Teresa Herrera. He’s now an expecting father and starting his 5th year in the PBA with Meralco and, suffice to say, there’s a whole lot of awesome promise in his future.
“I’m excited to start building a bright future with this team,” said Anthony. “While basketball and everything it entails (weights, therapy, yoga, skills, etc.) take up most of my time, I still enjoy a few things on my down time. I enjoy watching movies with my wife, reading, walking/playing with my dog and enjoying others sports as well.”
In spite of his busy schedule, he took time out for Backstage Pass, which wanted to find out what keeps Sean Anthony in the action zone.
Benefit of the bout
My favorite perks as a basketball player is… the ability to play basketball and make a living doing something you love. It’s a big enough perk as it is. Sometimes, I wake up and have a hard time believing I actually got here. But one thing I find amazing here in the PBA is the fans. I grew up in Canada where everyone watched hockey and no one cared about basketball, so to come here to the PBA now and play in front of the best basketball fans in the world is amazing.
Basketball stars whose career path I would like to emulate are… Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal. (I love them) not only for what they did on the basketball court, but what they did after their careers. I would like to win multiple championships like them and take the time to educate myself and grow my career after basketball as well.
The most extreme thing a basketball fan did for me is… go out of their way and bring cakes for me on my birthday, send me fan art and cheer me on during games. The PBA fans are the best and my fan club, the Seanatics, are the nicest and most loyal fans. There hasn’t been anything too extreme, but on my birthday, I decided to arrange a build with Habitat for Humanity and invited the Seanatics. I was surprised that about 30 of them showed up and we took a bus out and built houses in the sun all day. That was a cool experience with my fan club.
The best thing about being married to a supermodel is… she has a big heart and is an amazing person. I didn’t marry Teresa because she was a supermodel. The best thing about being married to her is I married my best friend and get to spend the rest of my life with her.
I get a lot of… LA Street Wear stuff. It’s weird that my wife is in the fashion industry but I don’t really get into it. Most of the clothes I own have been given to me. My in-laws own Greyone Social, Trilogy, and the brand Cartel so I get a lot of street wear clothing from them.
Keeping appearances
On an off season, the first thing I do is… Take one to two weeks to relax and chill. The PBA season is all year round so when we get the two-month break in August, I take the first week or two to just rejuvenate my body and mind. Usually that’s a trip somewhere with my wife.
My overall workout involves… staying conditioned, being explosive/quick, having a strong core and having an optimal range of motion in my movements. My workout routines and goals change during the various parts of the season in relation the schedule. But mainly for basketball I try to focus on those.
The kind of cardio I do is… through my skills training. So as I practice basketball skills and movements, I push myself at the same time to keep in shape.
The one body part I work on the most is… the core. Basketball, despite what people may think, is very physical, especially in the PBA. Your core allows you to maintain balance, take hits and make strong moves.
When I’m watching my weight… I eat healthy and train a lot. I don’t really watch my weight that much because it’s not that big of a deal, but I try and keep at a playing weight of about 205 lbs.
The one big lesson I learned from rehabilitating a sports injury is… how interconnected the body is. For example, I had an ankle sprain and did rehab but still played hurt. Eventually that led to changes in my movement pattern that led to a stiff back which resulted in over-straining my achilles. One injury would lead to another unless I fully rehabbed.
When it comes to grooming, I’m the kind of guy that… takes two to three showers a day, at least, if not more.
My grooming essentials are… Old Spice deodorant, Gillette shaving cream and Mach series razor, Gatsby hair wax, Armani sport cologne, Dove Shampoo and Master oil-control facial scrub. For body washes, I change it up. Sometimes it’s Old Spice, before, it was Adidas. Right now it’s Irish Spring.
Other products I use, but really belong to my wife are… all my wife’s sunscreen stuff when we go to the beach. I do active stuff like kite boarding, and surfing so I steal my wife’s Belo Sun Expert SPF50, because I never get my own. I also use this coconut exfoliating soap from The Farm at San Benito. She uses a bunch of natural stuff, too, so I use her Nature’s Gate gel toothpaste from Healthy Options.
Grooming guidelines
Athletic performance enhancement is, and will always be, a major part of the development process of an athlete. At Focus Athletics, all clients, whether they are athletes, weekend warriors, or kids can experience the same professional care.
The key to core training is decreasing unwanted movement of the core. This will promote majority of the energy to be transferred to your swimming and pedaling stroke, and running strides. All of these sports need a strong and stable core, but don’t strengthen the core themselves. Keep in mind that to be efficient is of top priority in endurance sports.

Top tip: If you regularly work up a sweat at your local gym or sports club, hitting the showers afterwards helps give your body some welcome relief by cooling it down.
