Stripes made a bold fashion statement at the French Open, as the red-orange clay courts of Roland Garros provided the perfect stage for the debut of Adidas’ latest incarnation.
No less than 2008 French Open champion and Serbian beauty Ana Ivanovic and France’s No. 1 men’s player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, both Adidas endorsers, presented the new tennis apparel from the Adidas Y-3 line. The collection is part of the Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas fashion collaboration, which creates what the latter has dubbed “the future of sportswear.”
Czech World No. 8 Tomas Berdych, Romania’s World No. 6 Simona Halep and statuesque French Kiki Mladenovic also donned the new Adidas stripes.
The camouflage zebra print formed criss-crossing and intersecting clusters, the stripes doing a dance of fluid motion. In black and white with red accents, the pattern gives the wearer a fresh, energetic look, as if to say he or she means serious business on court.
But these being Adidas stripes, they won’t just get splashed onto the usual sporty tops, bottoms and dresses.
The Y-3 tennis dress is all-camo in front but the back’s torso is of black mesh, featuring a red Y that runs from the straps to the spine. We loved seeing it on Ivanovic and Mladenovic, who wore it with matching visor and armbands, as well as braided ponytails.
The spunky Halep wore fun, quirky separates. Her first attire was a sleeveless form-fitting shirt with illusion suspenders paired with a tiered, ruffled black skirt—perhaps the coolest, most fashion-forward ensemble in the collection. On Halep, it was a youthful and playful look that showed even she can up her tennis-fashion game.
Her next outfit was a long-sleeved version of the shirt with faux suspenders, untucked against knee-length tights and the same black skirt.
The Y-3 women’s tennis collection also features printed leggings, black zip-up cropped jacket and a large tote. We predict these pieces to be irresistible, especially to devotees of the athleisure trend.
For men, a front-zip shirt and a sports headband flaunt the stripes. There’s also a pair of shorts, cap, sports jacket and duffel bag, all in black, which are bound to be just as covetable.
Rounding out the collection is the Barricade Boost Y3, tennis/sports shoes for men and women with, of course, the newest take on zebra stripes.
