Germs 101: These are the germs that live with you in your home | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Sometimes, we unknowingly subscribe to the idea that seeing is believing. One thing this should never apply to, though, is to your family’s health and safety. When it comes to potentially disease-causing germs, just because you don’t see signs of them anywhere, doesn’t mean they aren’t actually there. In fact, some of the most common kinds of germs can be found right under your nose.

Germs do live with you in your home and could put your loved ones at risk. Even with a house that’s spic-and-span, these stubborn microorganisms can still sneak up on you. Here are a few kinds of germs that deserve your special attention as well as a few useful tips to ensure a worry-free home for you and your family:

1. Staphylococcus
Found in: bathroom surfaces, certain household items… virtually everywhere.

The bacteria Staphylococcus is commonplace. Staphylococcus is a kind of bacteria that is able to grow both with and without oxygen, and can therefore be present in the skin, hair, nasal passages, and throats of even perfectly healthy people. Staphylococcus aureus, specifically, is notorious for causing staph infection. The infection can be spread through close contact, but also by sharing items which are potential staph bacteria reservoirs, like razors or towels. Other ailments caused by this bacteria are toxic shock syndrome, skin infections, and food poisoning.

2. Enterococcus
Found in: bathroom surfaces, doorknobs, towels, soaps, places with food residue.

Enterococcus, a bacteria that is present in the gastrointestinal tract, can cause infection or other serious health problems when it spreads to different parts of the body, especially for those with weak immune systems. Enterococci is present in fecal matter and therefore may be spread through improper hygiene, such as not washing your hands thoroughly after going to the bathroom. It can also be found in food residue, such as in the keyboards of your computers if you keep snacking away while you work.

3. Escherichia coli (E.coli)
Found in: kitchen utensils, contaminated water, food items

Probably one of the more well-known bacteria, E.coli are naturally found in the intestines, but can also cause severe intestinal infections. People who have more vulnerable immune systems need to be extra careful with how their food and water are handled. E.coli may be present in kitchen utensils and cutting boards, unclean water, dairy products that have been left out too long, and even fruits and vegetables.

4. Salmonella
Found in: kitchen surfaces, food items, contaminated water, pets

Also commonly known is Salmonella, which causes salmonellosis, or, as we like to call, food poisoning. Children and individuals with weak immune systems are more susceptible to infection. Salmonella rarely causes life-threatening diseases, but can develop into something more serious if it gets into the bloodstream. This bacteria can thrive in kitchen surfaces, raw meat, and any place that might have been exposed to human and animal waste.

5. Pseudomonas
Found in: bathroom sink, soil, water, plants

Although this genus is typically considered to be gained while in the hospital setting, certain environments at home, such as your bathroom sink, are similarly viable for this bacteria. Aeruginosa is a particular strain that can cause more serious infections. It is an opportunistic pathogen that is dangerous for individuals with compromised immune systems. It can be spread through water droplets.

6. Micrococcus
Found in: soil, water, meat products, dust

Micrococcus are relatively harmless microorganisms. The strain luteus is responsible for the stinky smell of human sweat. Micrococcus can also cause the spoilage of meat products and fish as it feeds on decaying materials. The bacteria is sometimes linked to diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis especially in people with compromised immune systems, but seldom identified as the cause of diseases.

7. Streptococcus mutans
Found in: your mouth, oral hygiene products, pillows

Streptococcus mutans feeds on the sugars and starches that are left in your mouth after eating. It then produces acid, which causes the erosion of the enamel of your teeth. This contributes to tooth decay. When you use oral hygiene products, it is possible that you carry a bit of bacteria even after thorough cleaning. It also thrives along the pillowcases which absorb your drool as you sleep.

You’re probably asking now what you can do about these unwanted guests in your home. Keep in mind, though, that some of these microorganisms are naturally present, so what you need to keep up is a healthy immune system and a clean home. Here are some extra measures that can better equip you and your household against germs:

1. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly.

Still probably your best defense, washing your hands properly along with other proper hygiene practices like using hand sanitizers can minimize the spreading of germs. Make sure to wash your hands after you use the restroom for at least thirty seconds.

2. Don’t forget the nooks and crannies.

Even if you’ve got the surface areas covered, germs can still live in the most unexpected of places. Your makeup bag, your hairbrush, doorknobs, microwave handles… even your gadgets. Make sure to replace your products when necessary–such as makeup applicators and hand towels. Regularly clean areas that are frequently exposed to human contact, but also regularly clean the most hidden areas, too.

3. Use a reliable cleaner like Domex.

We like to think of the bathroom as the place you go to get rid of germs, but coupled with moisture and heat, this also makes it a perfect environment for germs. A strong cleaner like Domex Ultra Thick Bleach, which kills all known germs, is your best bet against infections and illnesses. Use Domex for your everyday cleaning, for your bathroom and beyond.
