In “Ode to the Master Sansó” in Galerie Joaquin at the UP Town Center, abstractionist Milmar Onal hopes to portray Juvenal Sansó as he knew him: monumental in his importance in the art world, philosophical and bearing witness to the unwinding of time by his careful and detailed observation of seascapes, landscapes and flowers.
Onal fuses traditional landscape techniques to develop an authentic and textured aesthetic of his view of Sansó’s world.
Onal seeks to introduce Sansó to the younger audience. A painting graduate from the University of Santo Tomas, Onal has worked for TV and theater productions. He also took up several courses in Electronics that led him to develop a practice inspired from electrical flow and circuitry.
The show is on view until May 15.
Galerie Joaquin is at 2/F, Phase 2, UP Town Center, Katipunan Ave, Diliman, Quezon City; tel. 247 1109; e-mail [email protected].
Kaida
Kaida Contemporary is holding “Tao,” a solo exhibition by Jerson Samson, and “Sugar Pill,” a two-woman exhibition by Nina Garibay and Naomi Mendoza.
In his 22nd solo, painter and sculptor Samson brings to focus the many ways in which we perceive the individual. His sculptures personify movement by casting the human figure against the wind, resulting in what seems to be half-formed entities that shift and change with every glimpse of the curious eye, while his works on canvas take a step away from the individual by examining human emotion and experience as part of a larger whole.
In their joint exhibit, painter Garibay and sculptor Mendoza references consumer products and services that serve to distract people from their problems. I Both shows on view until May 20. —CONTRIBUTED
