Selena Gomez opens up about the treatment she underwent during  her 90-day hiatus.

In an interview with VogueSelena talked about her childhood sadness and feeling pressured during her tours. “Tours are a really lonely place for me,” she says. “My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage. Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable. I felt I wasn’t giving my fans anything, and they could see it—which, I think, was a complete distortion.”

Selena went on a short break last year after being diagnosed with lupus. The depression she felt is a result of the disease.

It’s been a few months since she came back—bagging a Coach deal and finding a romance with The Weeknd along the way—and Selena has Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to thank. “DBT has completely changed my life,” she says. “I wish more people would talk about therapy. We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart.”

DBT is a technique used in treating borderline personality disorder. It’s broadly used to improve a person’s communication and regulating their emotions. It also incorporates mindfulness practices in the therapy.

It’s good that Selena is encouraging people to get help when it’s needed. We all need to watch our mental health too as much as our physical  health. And if you need a break from social media like Selena, that’s perfectly fine too.

As of now, Selena isn’t starring in any film or TV show, and she’s not worrying about recording new music. She’s the executive producer of Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and that’s about it. “It feels like I don’t have to be holding my breath and waiting for somebody to judge a piece of work that I’m doing. I’m not eager to chase a moment. I don’t think there’s a moment for me to chase.”
