A cup of this so-called golden milk is loaded with antioxidants that fight cell damage, thanks to its ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric content
Turmeric, a member of the ginger family, is abundant in South Asia and most tropical countries. It’s often applied on wounds to protect against infection and is known to be beneficial against depression, high cholesterol, cancer, and premenstrual syndrome.
It is commonly used in India as a home remedy against colds given that it contains the active ingredient curcumin, which has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties that boost immunity.
This led me to golden milk (so called because of the color from turmeric), which I now drink regularly to incorporate this spicy root into my diet. The ingredients are so easy to find and making it takes less than five minutes.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp turmeric powder (equal to one-inch fresh turmeric or a tablespoon freshly grated turmeric)
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- A slice of ginger
- A drop of coconut oil
- Pinch of pepper (I personally prefer adding more because the spice just makes the drink more soothing!)
- 1/2 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
Directions:
- Mix all ingredients in a saucepan
- Wait for it to boil and simmer
A cup is loaded with antioxidants that fight cell damage because of the ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric. Aside from the health benefits, I simply enjoy having a cup because the drink soothes me. I recommend drinking it before going to bed, though personally, I make a cup whenever I want to feel refreshed or relaxed.
