Get ready, Studio Ghibli fans. 2020 is still your year with a new film coming from the legendary animation studio. Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki just announced that “Aya to Majo” will premiere within the coming months.
This upcoming feature film is based on a novel by the late Diana Wynne Jones. Yes, the same author of the famous Ghibli adaptation “Howl’s Moving Castle.” It follows the story of an orphan named Aya as a witch takes her into her unsettling home. In this film, Miyazaki teams up with his son Goro as he takes on the director’s chair. Toshio Suzuki also joins the duo as the film’s producer.
“What the world will be like in the post-coronavirus era? That’s one of the biggest questions many people have right now,” says Suzuki in a press statement. “I realized that one of the biggest features of this work is Aya’s intelligence. If you’re smart, you can survive in any era. Thinking of it that way made me lose any apprehension over it.”
“Aya to Majo” is a 3D3G animated film and will air on the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) this coming winter. As for its world premiere, we have to stay tuned for now.
