Korean makeuo artist Son Dae Sik remembers the moment he realized he wanted to devote his life to makeup. “My friend entered the Miss Korea pageant and she asked me to do her makeup. That’s when I decided I had the talent.”
Since then, Son Dae Sik has had a successful career in makeup, booking gigs at New York and Paris Fashion Week, working on campaigns and advertorials for brands like Chanel, Dior, MAC, Benefit, Shu Uemura, Lancome, Guerlain and Estee Lauder, and becoming Korea’s makeup artist to the stars. He has done the makeup of Chinese superstar Zhang Ziyi and Korean celebrities Lee Hyo Ri, Go So Young, Lee Young Ae, Song Hye Gyo and Rain, among others, making sure they are ready for the cameras.
Korean actors and pop stars are famous for having flawless skin and beautiful makeup. Realizing that women want to achieve the same kind of flawlessness with their everyday makeup, Korean skincare and cosmetics brand The Face Shop teamed up with Son Dae Sik to create the Flawless makeup Collection. Son Dae Sik said: “All women want to be beautiful. They want to have beautiful makeup everyday, just like their favorite celebrities who have their makeup done by professional makeup artists. This collection can lead you to that perfect, flawless and professionally done makeup.”
There are six products in the collection.
The Face It Flawless Fitting Foundation SPF35 PA++ (P1,195) is a foundation that is packed with shea butter and hyaluronic acid. The Face It Flawless Mineral Cover Powder (P1,195) will leave the complexion fresh and prevent shine. Women daunted by the task of applying eye makeup will like the Face It 4-Minute Smoky Kit (P1,495) which promises dramatic eyes in a few easy steps. The Face It 1-Touch Blusher Kit (P995) doesn’t just add a healthy flush to the cheeks, it can also be used as a highlighter to accentuate the cheek bones. The Face It Circle Face Brush (P595) and the Face It Artist Brush Kit (P1,195) are great tools to use with the rest of the collection.
Son Dae Sik was in Manila recently to hold a makeup class at the TriNoma Activity Center. He demonstrated the use of the entire collection to the big crowd that had gathered at the mall, stressing the importance of prepping the skin for makeup application. He said: “Korean women take time to prepare their skin before they apply makeup. It’s because you need to have a good canvas before you draw a picture on it.”
Lifestyle spent time with Son Dae Sik after the makeup lesson to talk about The Face Shop, makeup tips and this collection.
Why did you say yes to this collaboration with Face Shop?
The Face Shop is a well-known skincare brand. I have so much trust in the quality of their products. I have known the brand for several years now. I am confident that endorsing The Face Shop will be a win-win situation because I have so much faith in the quality of their products.
What is your definition of good makeup?
Good makeup should make you feel confident and earn you lots of compliments from people. Not in a “oh, you know, your makeup is so edgy,” but in a “oh, I wish I can do my makeup like she does” way. Pretty is the best.
What are your favorite Face Shop products?
Absolutely the Face It Flawless Fitting Foundation, of course. It’s the best product out of the whole collection. I’m in love with it.
Tell us about the Flawless Makeup Collection.
There are so many makeup products out there, and some people, especially those who are just beginning to wear makeup, have no idea where to start. I felt that it was my responsibility as a professional makeup artist to help them make the choice. I picked the most necessary items and put them together in this collection.
So it’s basically a good starter kit for beginners. But what about those who are used to wearing makeup? What can this collection offer them?
For them, ultimately, it will be a time-saving kit. Experienced makeup users tend to carry a lot of products in their bags but if they have a kit like this, it’s can be their go-to kit whenever they don’t have the time.
Any other tips for people who are just starting to learn how to apply makeup?
If you’re a beginner it’s best to start with just simplified steps. When you’re a beginner you tend to overdo it, but I am against that idea. Since you’re just beginning to wear makeup, you really don’t know yet what you like. Instead of being overwhelmed and playing with all the colors and all the makeup products out there, start with a couple of simple things and then apply lip product. Unless it’s a very special occasion, just go for foundation and blusher, instead of going all the way with eyeliners, mascara and heavy cheek and lip products that will make you look like a clown.
This collection is called Lesson 01, will there be Lesson 02?
Of course. Really soon.
