This article contains sensitive images of animals that were left behind and adversely affected by typhoon Ulysses

In the aftermath of typhoon Ulysses, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is imploring pet owners to give their furry companions a fighting chance during disasters. After floodwaters receded, the PAWS disaster response team found the remains of several animals that were chained or locked in their cages and left by their humans who had fled to evacuation centers.

PAWS has urged pet owners to unchain pets or release them from cages if they are unable to safely evacuate with the animals. This would give their pets a chance to survive instead of being dealt a death sentence by being trapped with nowhere to go.

The organization is also accepting donations for pets that have suffered or were injured because of the typhoon. It is accepting donations of dog and cat food, ready-to-eat food for pet owners, and hygiene packs to be distributed to the affected animals and individuals.

Donations in kind may be sent to the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center at Aurora Blvd. Katipunan Valley, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. Office hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays to Saturdays.

Cash donations may be coursed through the following:

The Bow-ery Pet Store has also compiled a list of donation drives for animal organizations who are in need of assistance:

May this also serve as a reminder for people who are thinking of gifting pets this Christmas. Pets aren’t just things you can leave behind. They’re living beings that require care and attention.

If you’re not sure your intended gift recipient is ready to care for an animal come hell or high water (literally, in this case), it’s best to give a stuffed toy instead.
