Two groups, both multiawarded, which have been instrumental in popularizing Philippine folk dances among audiences abroad are the London-based Lahing Kayumanggi Dance Company and the Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe. They will stage a 20th anniversary concert on April 25-26 at the Peta Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City (behind the Quezon City Sports Center).
Bayanihan is holding auditions to attract more trainees to join the dance sessions being conducted free by the national folk dance company of the Philippines.
Bayanihan, the National Folk Dance Company of the Philippines, opens its 2013 season at the Cultural Center of the Philippines with “Celebrations, Through the Eyes of Dance,” on Aug 22-24 at 8 p.m., and on Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. The repertoire draws from the classics as well as children’s games in the Philippine countryside.
Bayanihan, the national folk dance company of the Philippines, arrived recently from Istanbul, Turkey, after winning the Grand Prize, the Golden Bridge Award, in the 14th World Folklore Festival for the second time.
