Dying is no big deal. The least of us will manage it. Living is the trick.” That’s a eulogistic remark I love not just for its felicity, but for its infinite range of applicability. It’s by Red Smith, an absolute favorite of mine, too, and I cite it here for my own case.
In my sixth year as a newspaperman I tried to cross over to the “toy shop” of journalism. The analogy is owed to Jimmy Cannon, a sportswriter who took both sports and writing so seriously and wrote so well (indeed, before Red Smith there was him) he could only have intended it sarcastically—to get back at the disparagers of his craft.
“Dying is no big deal—everybody will manage it. Living is the trick,” says Red Smith, a Pulitzer Prize winner for column writing, not just sports writing, which he did all his life, himself living the trick until days before his death, at past 90.
