Facebook GIF Preen
Facebook knows how to keep up with the times.

So when everybody thought there couldn’t possibly be any changes to the profile picture, the social media giant begs to differ. Soon, seven-second moving pictures—a looping video for adults, the GIF for kids—may be used as your new headshots.

Profile photos can now be called profile videos. “You’ll be able to film a short, looping video clip that will play for anyone who visits the profile,” writes Facebook product managers Aigerim Shorman and Tony Hsieh in a recent blog post.

“Profile pictures will let you show a part of yourself you couldn’t before, and add a new dimension to your profile… They represent what’s going on in your life right now and what’s important to you, and we want to give people the tools to better express themselves in this way.”

The social media platform, however, still doesn’t allow photos in .gif format. To further show how it works, Facebook uploaded a teaser video to go with the update report.

More changes are also underway. For those who support timely causes, temporary profile pictures will be a thing. In case you hate how cramped your mobile Facebook profile is, you’ll be all over the the featured images section—that one thing that can break the monotony of your bland blue-and-white interface.

Things are still exciting for this popular platform. For those who said they’d quit Facebook, the time isn’t now.
