Scout’s honor | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Today’s millennials (aka Generation Y) are always on the lookout for the latest in culture, art, music, film, events, people and more. While there are plenty (and we mean plenty) of millennial-related flotsam on the Internet—it is their playground after all—it’s nice to have a ’zine (for free!) that provides a space for all these.

Aptly enough, Scout’s maiden issue focuses on “firsts”—from first tattoos, how to dress up for your first job interview, to a walk down memory lane through a recollection of childhood firsts.

Check out the magazine’s ’90s-themed launch party today at the Samsung Hall of SM Aura. Fun artists like Pedicab, Tarsius, Ang Bandang Shirley, Cheats, The Strangeness, DancePlayCreate, The Ransom Collective, Autotelic and Kai Honasan will be performing, together with sets by DJs Brian Cua, Judd Figuerres and Xtina Superstar.

Cai Subijano

Editor in chief

Define Scout in one word or phrase.

Scrappy.

In five words, what do you do at the magazine?

Stress like it’s a newborn.
If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?

Christina Tosi’s Corn Cookies for Momofuku Milk Bar. Not as obvious as a chocolate chip cookie but definitely worth the calories. And the long-haul to NY.

Who is your crush?

Redd Claudio, drummer of The Ransom Collective and one of the faces of Scout magazine’s social media campaign.

Your current obsession?

My new Juju Jellies sandals. Been looking for a pair forever and finally found my dream baby blue pair in Topshop over the weekend. I’m also tripping on jumpers, but can’t find a pair that doesn’t make me look like a giant toddler.

Your favorite first?

My first paycheck. All I see is signs, all I see is … peso signs.

Tell us about your (real or imaginary) tattoo.

I’m not averse to getting tattoos, but I’ve never seriously considered this. Probably something that reminds me of my parents.

What do you miss the most from the ’80s or ’90s?

Telebabad.

What is your selfie:nonselfie ratio?

1:00000.362? I am selfie-loathing. Seriously, check my Instagram.

Which other local musician or band do you think the world needs to hear?

I wish Daydream Cycle would come back. Its music was ahead of its time, and it could definitely school some of today’s young electronic musicians.

Why should people read Scout?

For millennials, it’s something new and exciting for both their eyeballs and brains. Also, it’s a celebration of youth, and everyone likes to feel young and invincible every now and then.

Which article should they read first and why?

Probably Vinny Tagle’s piece on slut-shaming. I think the Philippines, especially the media, has a lot of ways to go when it comes to gender politics.

Ches Gatpayat

Graphic designer

Define Scout in one word or phrase.

Yes!!!

In five words, what do you do at the magazine?

Perform magic tricks through visuals.

If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?

Those fresh-out-the-oven “experimental” homemade cookies made by friends during a sleepover. The ones with pretzel/brownie/fruit/whatever bits inside.

Who is your crush?

I have a lot! One of them is Lach Caskey, guitarist of the Last Dinosaurs. Hi Lach! If you’re reading this, please go on a date with me.

Your current obsession?

Maru in Michigan, a photo blog that features photos of an adorable little boy named Issa and his dog named Maru. If you’re looking for a surge of happiness, there’s no doubt that this blog can give you that.

Your favorite first?

First painting that made me realize I wanted to do something related to art for the rest of my life. It was “The Lovers” by surrealist artist Rene Magritte. Still my favorite painting of all time!

Tell us about your (real or imaginary) tattoo.

I’ve always wanted a tattoo of an unrealistic eye on my nape. Maybe if I pretend it’s real then I actually can start seeing things from behind… Oh, and a tattoo of an analog watch without hands on my wrist would be cool, too.

What do you miss the most from the ’80s or ’90s?

Polaroid i-Zone instant cameras! That came out in 1999, I was 4 years old back then, and that was the first camera I ever got. A 4-year-old + an instant camera = shots of grownups’ shoes, heads cut off the frame and a Barbie doll collection in every possible angle.

What is your selfie:nonselfie ratio?

1:I-don’t-really-like-taking-selfies. Unless it’s one of those moments I feel the need to document. I’d rather not be in the picture.

Which other local musician or band do you think the world needs to hear?

Top 5: Ourselves the Elves, The Buildings, Moonwlk, Identikit and Wilderness. (Sorry I couldn’t give you just one.)

Why should people read Scout?

The youth is always looking for new things to explore, learn from and feel excited about. I think Scout just does the trick.

Which article should they read first and why?

The article written by Vinny Tagle. It really makes you think twice about  the way biases work among different social classes.

Ellie Centeno

Content manager

Define Scout in one word or phrase.

DIY.

In five words, what do you do at the magazine?

Keep our scout cookies warm.

If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?

Chips Ahoy! White Fudge Chunky—the only cookie I wouldn’t share.

Who is your crush?

English singer-songwriter Roo Panes. He’s an amazing musician and is really good-looking. Plus, he has an accent.

Your current obsession?

Fried chicken is my forever obsession.

Your favorite first?

The first concert I went to, alone, was Good Charlotte in 2005, and I was 11.

Tell us about your (real or imaginary) tattoo.

What does mine say? “Dude!” “Sweet!”

What do you miss the most from the ’80s or ’90s?

Good pop songs and “The Magic School Bus.”

Which other local musician or band do you think the world needs to hear?

People need to listen to electronic musician SOUL_BRK and indie pop band The Buildings.

Why should people read Scout?

Scout can be the creative millennials’ go-to magazine to keep themselves in the loop on everything that’s current. Scout is also quite a visual treat.

Which article should they read first and why?

Coco Quizon’s article on her first close encounters with the male gaze and puberty. It’s an interesting and surprisingly funny read considering it’s an adult’s take on her preteen self’s feelings.

Pepi Moran

Editorial assistant

Define Scout in one word or phrase.

Full of youthful energy!

In five words, what do you do at the magazine?

I help sail the ship.

If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?

Pepperidge Farm Milanos. All I’ll need from you to believe in me is one bite.

Who is your crush?

Reggie Belmonte.

Your current obsession?

“A Song of Ice and Fire.” I’ve spent the past two months catching up with the entire series on paper, and now I know more than the people who watch the show.

Your favorite first?

The first time I ever lived away from home. You have no idea how delicious freedom is. (OK, maybe some of you do.)

Tell us about your (real or imaginary) tattoo.

Tattoos aren’t my thing, but if I really had to get one, I’d want to get some Polynesian tribal design. Too bad, though, because those designs are sacred for their people, and I’m not about to insult the next Polynesian I’d meet.

What do you miss the most from the ’80s or ’90s?

All the shows on Nickelodeon. All the ’90s sitcoms. They don’t make them like they used to anymore.

What is your selfie:nonselfie ratio?

I don’t like selfies, man. If you see a photo of me on my Instagram, chances are someone else took it for me.

Which other local musician or band do you think the world needs to hear?

Tom’s Story—this local postrock band that is crazy good. Amazing musicianship. That and one of my best friends making the rounds in the scene, DJomampo.

Why should people read Scout?

So they could learn something new. And there shouldn’t be a limit on what you know.

Which article should they read first and why?

Vinny Tagle’s article on “slut-shaming”; there’s a lot of work to be done on fixing our broken little society. Start here, readers, if not anywhere else.

Bea Carmela

Writing intern

Define Scout in one word or phrase.

Daring.

In five words, what do you do at the magazine?

So far, always something new.

If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?

A snickerdoodle. Some sugar and a little bit of spice. It isn’t an everyday cookie, and is even a little unexpected, but can be great given the right season.

Who is your crush?

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962).

Your current obsession?

Climbing mountains. I started about a year ago and now I try to do it whenever I can. I’ve reached eight peaks but hiked 10 mountains…

Your favorite first?

For my first-ever concert, my mom took me and my sister to see Mariah Carey when I was 12. She started the show two hours late wearing a micromini sequin dress and showed us why she can get away with all that.

Tell us about your (real or imaginary) tattoo.

When I was a kid I was all about the butterfly and dolphin stick-ons. Now, if I ever got an animal tattoo, it would probably be a wolf. Or an octopus.

What do you miss the most from the ’80s or ’90s?

Nick at Nite. Particularly “Rocko’s Modern Life,” and making pizza-wiches with my best friend at 3 a.m.

What is your selfie:nonselfie ratio?

1:50, perhaps. I’m more into the foodstragram.

Which other local musician or band do you think the world needs to hear?

Similarobjects.

Why should people read Scout?

Scout isn’t afraid of opinions. Some publications run away from that because they want to shun controversy, but Scout lets itself be a vehicle for people to voice out their concerns of and about our generation.

Which article should they read first and why?

I love Coco Quizon’s article “Britney Spears and My Initiation into the Male Gaze.” I think it’s something any woman can relate to, but a lot of them don’t realize what the male gaze is.
