When my mother was younger, she used to tell me that she would lay out in the sun and hope to get the freckles she saw on mestiza (half-Spanish) beauties who featured on Camay commercials. This was likely before people noticed that gaping hole in our ozone layer, and thought sun exposure was still safe.

And since laying out in the sun isn’t really an option anymore because it can cause skin cancer (and is entirely futile if you just don’t have the freckle gene), entrepreneur Remi Brixton created a Kickstarter campaign for a product called Freck Yourself, a semi-permanent freckle stencil.

“The kit comes with 72 self-adhesive stencils and a rollerball of formula that is similar in formulation to sunless tanner,” goes the description on the product’s Kickstarter page. “The freckle patterns look natural and last [two] days. Users who apply Freck Yourself every morning have several layers of faded frecks (sic) which produces incredibly realistic results for four to six weeks.”

If this is something you’re into, know that they have only 20 days to reach their goal of $215,000—so far, they’ve managed to raise $13,324—so start backing!

While Filipina standards of beauty haven’t changed much since since our parents’ time—fair skin is still the ideal—we’ve become a little more accepting of different types of skin tones. But I still think freckles, a pigmentation disorder common among fair women, are cute. I mean, just look at model Monika Sta. Maria.

But before I end this, a disclaimer: I think women are most beautiful when they accept the features they were born with rather than try and become something they’re not. If you’re a mestiza, chinita (half-Chinese), or morena (pure Filipina), own it!

That being said, do whatever makes you feel most beautiful—that’s your business, and yours alone.
