Collaborations, it seems, are a thing of the past. Today, celebrities both local and international are coming up with their own makeup lines in an effort to fill gaps in the cosmetic industry as well as expand their respective brands.

Megawatt stars like model Miranda Kerr, model-turned-host Tyra Banks and actress Jessica Alba have churned out skincare and cosmetic lines that reflect their personal advocacies and tastes.

The idea is that anything that celebrities touch becomes a consumable product that lets fans get “closer” to the real thing— even if that means purchasing overpriced body butters and foundation sticks.

However, I have to say that not all celebrity cosmetics are gimmicks.

A notable few do have remarkable ranges. Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty has been received favorably by beauty junkies around the globe, thanks to its strong emphasis on diversity and its celebration of people of color. An answer to the beauty industry’s long-running problem over shade matches, Fenty Beauty’s array of 40 foundation shades has earned the artist major props.

Of course, we wouldn’t be talking about celebrity cosmetics without mentioning the Kardashians, the youngest Jenner being the most prominent. Kylie Cosmetics, Kylie Jenner’s namesake brand, started out with lip kits that kept getting sold out in 2016. Lips suddenly became all the rage, toppling Cara Delevingne’s famous eyebrows and Michelle Williams’ skin.

Her other famous sister Kim Kardashian-West also joined in on the fun. A few months ago, she released KKW Beauty. Unlike Kylie’s obsession with lips, Kim capitalized on her contoured and highlighted features, making her contouring sticks the ultimate winners.

Speaking of cult favorites, American tattoo artist, model and TV personality Kat Von D is now a fast-rising beauty maven for bold makeup collections that both work and stand out. Her vast range of lip liners and immovable yet nourishing lipsticks make color transfer impossible and application a dream. Her eyeliners and contour palettes are also hard to beat, with their hardworking formulations that don’t budge throughout the day.

Back home, Anne Curtis has added makeup entrepreneur to her resume with blk Cosmetics. Certified cruelty-free by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta), her makeup brand is a collection of versatile lip shades and a trusty contour palette.

It’s an affordable way to cop the looks of the country’s most-known face, with a simple swipe of a cream lippie or a light dusting of highlighter here and there.
