What better way to show the difference in makeup trends than applying both styles on either halves of one’s face.

Korean YouTuber Daiya did this and demonstrated how some key elements differentiated Japanese from Korean makeup trends.

For starters, she talked about the hue preference between the two countries. Daiya noted that the Japanese preferred shades of pink coral and coral orange, as well as nude colors.

Meanwhile Koreans leaned more towards orange-red, pink-yellow and brown.

Before demonstrating the makeup application process, she noted that both countries preferred fair skin.

As Daiya applied eye makeup, differences could already be seen with the amount she put on. The Korean side favored thicker, more pronounced colors, while the Japanese side had a more subdued cleaner look.

Cheeks had a more matte appearance for the Korean side due to the foundation, while the Japanese favored a sheen on the cheekbone area.

The lips had a visibly large difference. Korean makeup trends called for brighter and bolder layers of red. On the other hand, Japanese lip cosmetics leaned more on pinks for a girlish look.

Apart from using make up application techniques on each side preferred by Japanese and Koreans, respectively, Daiya also used cosmetics commercially available in the two countries. The Japanese side used Japanese products, and the Korean side used Korean cosmetics.

While trends may be different between neighbors Korea and Japan, both countries have developed successful cosmetic industries, making them among the forerunners in international pop culture and fashion. JB
