More than 80 children joined a special Inquirer Read-Along session last Saturday on the eve of Father’s Day where tales valuing hard working fathers and teaching kids to love their parents were read.

Inquirer sportswriter June Navarro and son Gavin top billed the session, reading in tandem “Arroz Caldo ni Lolo Waldo” by Becky Santos-Gerodias. It relates how a grandfather’s resilience saves the family from an imminent bankruptcy by selling chicken rice porridge that eventually becomes a big business.

Highlighting the image of an admirable father, the older Navarro said: “Lolo showed that you have to make effort in whatever you do to be extraordinary.”

Also featured storytellers for the session were GMA child actor and singer John Kenneth who read Jeanette Patindol’s “Tight Times,” veteran storyteller Rich Rodriguez of Ang Pinoy Storytellers read “Ang Madyik Silya ni Titoy” by Russell Molina, and the teachers of the Sophia School in Meycauayan City, Bulacan who read Eugene Evasco’s “Ang Riles sa Tiyan ni Tatay.”

Saturday’s session, hosted by Inquirer Lifestyle Super’s editor and read-along regular host Ruth Navarra-Mayo, was held at the Inquirer main office in Makati in cooperation with Inquirer Entertainment.

Dan Paurom of Inquirer Social Media livestreamed the event.

The kids from Saturday’s session were from Virlanie Foundation, Antonio Regidor Elementary School, Caypombo Elementary School, F. Benitez Elementary School, Precious Gem and Good Shepherd Elementary School. /atm
