Fathers are made of lots of wonderful things like pounds of strength, ounces of style and loads of understanding. All dads have a unique way of rearing and loving their children.

In the spectrum of uniqueness, I would say my dad, Alex Prieto, would be high up the scale. He has always been an outlier, which must mean the DNA of my fruit comes from the Prieto tree.

Fathers’ Day is extra special this year because my parents are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. We are just overwhelmed with all the blessings and unforgettable memories we’ve shared throughout their 50 years.

Most of the June magazine covers are of Good Ol’ Dads, like Town & Country’s featuring Ironman Fred Uytengsu. As the true paradigm of Superman, Fred balances his role as a dedicated father and husband along with managing a multibillion-peso company. Other successful dads and sons are also highlighted like McDo mogul George Yang and sons, Kris, Kenneth and Richie; and hotel giant Archie King and son Atticus.

The issue also focuses on philanthropy, with an excellent piece on congressional wife Kaye Tinga and her favorite charities. Kaye and I are in the midst of planning the annual Red Cross Ball, fully supported by Summit Publications.

Special segment

Another magazine, Metro Society, has a special segment presenting 16 Men in Suits. Each of the men featured was chosen for his accomplishments and personal sense of style. The launch was a great way for all to gather and enjoy a few snifters of Rémy Martin, the finest quality champagne cognac.

The 16 included private banker Felix Barrientos, antiques dealer David Kaufman, architect Conrad Onglao and Harbour Center head Mikee Romero. The House of Rémy Martin marked the special occasion by introducing the exclusive red bottle edition, a dazzling bottle perfect for any celebration. Joey Pineda of Remy Cointreau Philippines toasted the handsome gentlemen, all looking extra dashing in their suits.

Dads are made for golf and gadgets, so I believe the best gifts for them are sports-related and high-tech stuff. For instance, my brother Andrew is in town for the golden festivities, but while he is visiting he is also hitting the golf course.

Multi-everything phone

Like any dad, Andrew is pining for a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3G. This multi-everything phone has everything! His wife, Myda, told me it now has over a 100,000 free apps available, and its camera and video are in full HD. The newest model, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi, was launched earlier this year for a younger, more multi-media savvy user. We’ll see if that includes Andrew.

Samsung has launched a new campaign, “Life 2.0,” to choose outstanding and diverse leaders who could champion the Galaxy Tab. One of the ambassadors is artist/dad Ivan Acuña, who is constantly rocking the local art scene with his avant-garde style. This master abstract artist has also been very generous, sponsoring the Red Cross Ball annually.

Among the other ambassadors are Jaymie Pizarro of Bullrunner Magazine, Liza Ilarde of Manila Bulletin and Rosan Cruz of Lopez Holdings. All love the seven-inch touchscreen, perfectly sized between the small iP and the bigger iP.

As it is Fathers’ Day, I’d like to run down a few shows happening soon that dads out there might enjoy watching.

LLoyd Webber revue

For older dads like my own dad, Alex, and father-in-law, Jess, there is “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber,” produced by showmasters Concertus and showing at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines beginning on June 24.

Concertus, after the phenomenal success of “CATS” Manila last year, has teamed up with Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, David Atkins Enterprises and All Youth Channels to produce this stunning, new production. It’s a limited run, so get your tickets early.

For the younger dads, like my brother, Paolo, and brothers-in-law Robin and Philip, I recommend pop icon Kylie Minogue, who brings her “Aphrodite Live 2011” world tour to Manila on July 5. Unbelievable as it may seem, this is Kylie’s first ever concert in the country. The Araneta Coliseum will surely be packed for the Aussie goddess.

Inspired by Greek mythology and culture, the brand-new extravagant “Aphrodite Live 2011” will feature an array of specially designed props, including a 14-feet tall golden Pegasus, a golden chariot, five video screens, and a sweeping staircase.

And for the soon-to-be-50 dads, like my hubby Dennis, well I think my forever-young hubby kind of regrets having missed the Miley Cyrus concert this week. Happy Fathers’ Day, anyway, to all the great dads out there!
