Netflix has debuted the first trailer for Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde”, starring Ana De Armas as Marilyn Monroe. Based on the novel by John Carol Oates, the film will center around the troubled life of Monroe from her volatile beginnings as Norma Jean, and her subliminal success in Hollywood.
“[The film] boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, ‘Blonde’ blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”, its official synopsis reads.
The film’s director Andrew Dominik shared with Vulture in May “There’s something in it to offend everyone.”, referring to its NC-17 rating which reportedly caused tension between Dominik and Netflix. However, the director has expressed “nothing but gratitude for Netflix,”, sharing how the streaming giant supported the title through and through.
Prior to Ana De Armas playing the role of the blonde bombshell herself, Naomi Watts was originally set to play Monroe when the film began development in 2010. However, it was later passed on to Jessica Chastain, and then finally De Armas. In a report by The Guardian, the Knives Out actress referred to her work in the film as “the most intense work” she has ever done.
“Blonde” releases worldwide on September 23.
