Sofitel Philippine Plaza played a pivotal role in my fashion comeback to the Philippines after 12 years in the United Arab Emirates.
My dear friend Yasmine Hidalgo-Giovannoli, then based in Dubai, also moved back to Manila around the same time and became Sofitel’s PR director. As part of her grand plans for Spiral, she invited me to do a fashion show on the iconic Spiral staircase. It felt like destiny that we returned to the Philippines and ended up working together for this beautiful hotel.
Naturally, I couldn’t say no. My first fashion show in the Philippines, titled “Orient Express,” was held at Spiral to celebrate the Chinese New Year in February 2013. Directed by the incredibly talented Robby Carmona, the show highlighted his creative genius in showcasing the venue, models and my collection in perfect harmony.
The success of this show led to my involvement in nearly all of Sofitel’s major events, including fashion shows for future Chinese New Year celebrations, Sofitel’s French-themed “Brigitte Bardot: La Légende,” Sofitel Wine Days, Le Grand Royal Brunch and the launch of their grand ballroom.
Overwhelming
From 2013 to 2018, I had the honor of staging seven shows at Sofitel, each one an overwhelming experience. Every time I worked with Sofitel, I was treated to their legendary hospitality, from my favorite dishes to new culinary creations. The dedication of the Sofitel staff to my needs and the luxury of a suite overlooking Manila Bay made each stay unforgettable.
After a busy day, relaxing while watching the sunset from my room or at Club Millésime, the executive lounge, was a cherished ritual. The lounge, with its bespoke cocktails and delectable buffet, became my favorite spot in the hotel.
Dining at Spiral was always a delight, with its vast array of food choices, and I never missed visiting the cheese room or savoring the best spicy laksa in the Philippines. A particularly memorable honor was designing uniforms for various departments, from reception to Club Millésime. My favorite design was the lobby greeter’s uniform, a mauve/lilac Filipiniana gown. It was especially gratifying when hotel guests admired these uniforms and asked me to design gowns for them.
The news of Sofitel Manila’s closure on July 1 was heartbreaking. The cozy rooms, exquisite food and the staff’s warm Filipino hospitality will now be fond memories. Letting go of a place that brought such joy and beautiful moments is difficult. Sofitel Manila will always remain in my heart, much like the stunning sunsets I once watched from its balcony, my second home. —CONTRIBUTED
