For its 20th anniversary, the world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” finds its once hero and savior now its destroyer
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” just turned 20. In celebration of the Nickelodeon classic, show creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced the long-awaited follow-up to “Legend of Korra,” “Avatar: Seven Havens.”
According to Nickelodeon, the upcoming series is set in “a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra—but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.”
Instead of being set in the modern era, “Avatar: Seven Havens” will likely take place in a post-apocalyptic dystopia on the brink of collapse. Though, we aren’t quite sure if what awaits us is a Mad Max-coded wasteland where humanity still retains some of its technology or a society sent back to the Stone Age. One thing’s for sure, however, it’s a world much worse than what Aang woke up in. Which leads many to ask: What did Korra do?

Though, it is unlikely that Korra will have really been the true cause of the world’s destruction—a mystery that will only unfold as the new story unfolds.
Each Avatar thus far has also benefited from having mentors and a group of friends and comrades guide them as they mature into both the world’s leader and savior. With everyone still alive practically opposed to the existence of an Avatar—not to mention the disappearance of a connection to the Avatar’s past lives thanks to Korra (what hasn’t she messed up?)—we also wonder who’ll be there to guide our Earthbending twins?
“Avatar: Seven Havens” is also reported to have 26 half-hour episodes across two seasons. “When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later. This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters,” said show co-creators and writers DiMartino and Konietzko.
Aside from the new series, there’s also an upcoming animated film focusing on the events taking place after the “Last Airbender” coming in January 2026. The confirmed cast includes Dave Bautista, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, and Eric Nam.
On the live-action side, Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2” is also reported to premiere in 2026. A third season has also been greenlit.
