Your new fitspo might come from this 'Animal Crossing' outfit archive | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Streetwear’s new runway now comes in the form of virtual islands. Ready to spot your new fitspo on a chibi-esque avatar?

The Nintendo Switch RPG “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” is finding more and more popularity in this time of quarantine. Imagine a flip version of our reality, where life is lived on your perfect island, goals are slow-paced and almost non-existent, and everything comes in adorable candy colors. One ticket to Tom Nook’s agency, please.

Aside from the laid-back faux-lifestyle, the game also comes with extremely customizable wardrobes for players to experiment with. Anyone who’s been a fan of life simulation games like The Sims know that working on your looks is half the game, and fashion enthusiasts have flocked to “Animal Crossing” to fulfill their sartorial fantasies.

From recreations of designer pieces to experimental dress-up, the Animal Crossing fashion community has found endless creative ways for self-expression. The culture has boomed so much that photographer and beatmaker Kara Chung has created a fashion archive of “Animal Crossing” fits for everyone to boot or toot.

We talked to the ACFA creator about how the project came to be, her tips on creating your own custom fit and a more game recos to tide Switch users over until the end of quarantine.

How did this archive get started?

I had a group chat with a few friends, and we were designing outfits using the in-game customisation tool. I started sharing the outfits of people I knew personally, and eventually started getting inbox messages from people who chanced upon the page. It’s become a lighthearted way to socialise in the experience of being isolated indoors.

Why do you think people are getting so invested in the game?

The game has no stakes and is very casual. It’s a good way to relax amid the pressure of current events. There are many people self-isolating, and the game gives us a platform for shared experiences with loved ones we haven’t seen in weeks.

Do you have any D.I.Y. AC fashion designing hacks you can share?

Pick out an item with details that make it recognisable – be it the typography, colours, or pattern. Customize the colours on the palette for more accurate representation. If you have a piece that looks complex, plot out different “blocks” and mark each rough area with the brush tool to attain the right proportions. Fill in the blanks after.

Do you happen to have other game recos we can turn to for comfort during quarantine?

Right now I’m replaying Dragon Warrior III on the Nintendo Switch, an 8-bit game I first ran through when I played it on the Gameboy Color. It’s a classic, turn-based RPG that I highly recommend I [also] love playing Apex Legends, a free Battle Royale style game you can play in teams of 3. Beyond the vivid graphics, a diverse range of characters make the game interesting through every run through. Last but not the least, the long-awaited Final Fantasy 7 remake—which is coming out in a few days.
