Pleasant surprises in a most unlikely dining place | Lifestyle.INQ

The one restaurant that did not immediately entice this diner even after we’ve passed by it so many times, and which, after much deliberation, finally piqued our curiosity, is tucked in a most unlikely area in BF Homes, Las Piñas.

Mama Lou’s Italian Kitchen

Block 1, Lot 36, Tropical Ave. cor. Palace St., BF International, Las Piñas, Metro Manila; tel. 5191977.

One would wonder whether this restaurant has a clientele, considering its location—the former Tropical Palace, now looking abandoned with wild grass growing around the area. But, unexpectedly, some pleasant surprises greeted this diner and company when we finally decided to have a meal there.

Dining area—The entrance is a bit discouraging. The patio has a few pieces of period furniture in some sort of disarray. But this is an old house, converted into a restaurant. The ambiance is homey. Visible from the main dining area is a small room enclosed by a glass door that looks like a communication center with a computer and big-screen TV. Chairs and tables are vintage. The color scheme is almost Italian—reddish orange and green. There are picture frames on the walls and a big sign on the window facing the street, saying the resto can be reached through e-mail and Twitter.

Service—An alert doorman offers an umbrella as guests alight from their cars, especially when it’s raining. Waiting time is normal. The kitchen is apparently efficient.

Staff—Three ladies handle a roomful of diners. It was surprising that people continued to come and fill the restaurant to capacity despite its rather remote location. The waitresses, looking neat in their crisp white tops and black bottoms, are gracious, even when receiving some negative comments.

Suggested orders—The portions are big and can be shared by two. Food flavors, on a scale of 1-10, merit an 8 because of some lapses. One needs to sprinkle more cheese on the otherwise perfect Greek Salad of fresh greens with feta cheese and olives with a light dressing.

The artichoke in the pasta dish adds much texture, but the Chicken in Marsala Sauce was rather a disappointment. The blended flavors of the wine and the natural juice of the chicken satisfy perfectly, but the chicken was so tough, even a steak knife could not cut it.

The Banana Crepe dessert, though, is a must—an “envelop” of soft pancake, filled with slices of banana and laced with yummy chocolate.

Government and service charges are included in the bill. Senior discount is extended.
