The best burgers and wings–with Italian pesto, or Thai red curry sauce | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

There is no way I will not try a dining place that offers burger and wings. Not exactly the healthiest combination, but to me, they’re one of the tastiest dishes to have come out of the Americas.

Let me analyze what I think make these two so yummy. Chicken wings: partly white and dark meat, surrounded with skin which when fried transforms into something crunchy, moist and definitely tasty. Makes one look like he or she has just applied lip gloss. And, wings with good sauce are even better.

Take Buffalo Wings: After steaming and baking the wings to a crisp, they are soaked in a mix of butter and Tabasco. The spice of this mixture, when dipped in anything milky or creamy, will tone down the spiciness, resulting in a crispy, moist and delightful combination. Anything with cream or milk is the best way to tone down anything spicy. In some versions of this dish, the wings are dust with flavored flour and deep-fried. Still a winner!

Superior flavor

Burgers: It is the ratio of beef meat and fat that gives it superior flavor. Some rely on the marbling of the beef, while others rely on the herbs and seasoning. The bun, too, is crucial. It has to be just the same size as the burger, and not too thick.

I like my burgers grilled, and without cheese. Maybe with light mayonnaise and some veggies, but preferably plain.

There are many burger joints in Manila. But for me, the New World Hotel coffee shop still offers the best beef burger in town, while Good Burgers in Barrio Kapitolyo, Pasig, has the best chicken and veggie burgers.

A few weeks ago, I came across a fairly new restaurant run by two college buddies. It’s called BC Burgers and Chix—also in Pasig, but in a quite nondescript area, so it’s a classic example of a resto find.

The menu offers a variety of burgers, wings and a few pasta dishes. I tried the chicken wings, which are the deep-fried version coated with a variety of sauces. A standout was the one with Italian pesto sauce. The sauce is coated on the hot and crispy wings; what a brilliant idea, I thought.

Another must-try came coated with Thai red curry sauce. This I liked the most, since red curry paste is the spiciest of the Thai curries. It was crispy, spicy, your nose will have beads of sweat—from satisfaction.

Other versions

Other versions of the wings are from other countries: Teriyaki from Japan, Tequila from Mexico, Oyster sauce from China, Binagoongan from our shores, barbecue Cajun from New Orleans, Fiery Korean, Jerk from Jamaica and—Honey lemon, from… I have no idea where.

I loved the taste of the burgers—moist and tasty and sandwiched between a pan de sal-like bun. Maybe a fried egg will also be good with it. Yummy. Then there was the Gambaroni pasta—toasted garlicky al dente pasta with shrimps.

Very interesting menu! The place also has imported beers and prices are affordable.

I have been back to this place a few times with my son Arturo, and he agrees it is worth sampling everything on the menu. He swears by the Dirty Harry or Sloppy Joe. Check them out.

Happy Eating!
