The first online Art in the Park has virtual portraiture sessions and mixed media exhibits | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

While the pandemic may have stopped Art in the Park from opening its gates in March, the art fair will be pushing through next month with a few changes to accommodate health protocols amid the current situation—including taking the whole event online.

From Aug. 10 to 17, the country’s most affordable art fair will be moving from the Jaime Velasquez Park in Makati to a centralized website. The event will be showcasing artworks from 53 galleries, independent art spaces, art collectives and student groups.

Prices for all the artworks sold at the event are capped at P50,000. A portion of the sales will be donated to the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI), which supports programs and projects by the National Museum of the Philippines.

Aside from making art more affordable, Art in the Park will also be hosting special exhibits from their roster of featured artists. One of these is “Isometric Ay! lah, lah, land…,” which features colorful prints and paintings from Richard Quebral, an Ilocos-based mixed media artist who specializes in whimsical vintage-inspired collages.

Visitors will also get to learn about Quebral’s art-making process through a video series to be launched on Art in the Park’s website and social media accounts.

Another exhibit people can look out for is Dex Fernandez’s “Garapata Hatchery.” Through his Garapata alter ego, he will be creating a special paper mural that will be sectioned into 22 separate artworks. The process behind this mural will be documented in a specially-produced time-lapse video.

For visitors who want to witness live art sessions, Jackie Hontiveros Lozano will be hosting a virtual portraiture demonstration. Here, she will be showcasing the process behind her Anonymous portrait style, which involves layered palette knife strokes.

Other live sessions in the lineup include those by artist and illustrator Robert Alejandro, which will be held on the art fair’s social media accounts. There will also be performances by dance group Fifth Wall Fest and singer-songwriter Martti Franca.
