Indulge in water sports, join a fun run, do a ‘Game of Thrones’ marathon, watch a new musical inspired by BenCab’s Sabel
HERE comes the sun! The heat is on to find the best summer activities for the family. With temperatures soaring, it’s best to keep cool and enjoy all sorts of water sports.
Summer means Speedo time! The iconic swimwear brand held its annual Spring/Summer runway show at Glorietta Activity Center last month. A strong collection was unveiled, with great swimwear and flattering beachwear for all types of swimmers, from those who swim for fun to those who strive to compete.
Speedo’s designs are focused on graphics, prints and bold colors. The general theme is “intensify,” especially in the Fitness collection, updating technique-enhancing swimwear to include compression panels. These help swimmers engage core muscles, minimizing drag and translating into a more efficient swim.
The Speedo Sculpture collection is more for the leisure crowd, with bright prints and high-stretch fabrics throughout the range. Each suit is designed to last 10 times longer than conventional swimwear.
The Play & Fun Collection is the most fashionable, with flattering and feminine styles in bright colors.
For the truly competitive swimmer, the updated Fastskin LZR Racer Elite 2 was shown. This suit has increased water repellency, compression and core-stabilization properties. Champion swimmers Jessie Lacuna and Ariana Herranz were the perfect models for this amazing suit.
Speedo Swim Fitness ambassador Akiko Thomson-Guevara, husband Chips and their two kids, Elijah and Noah, shared the runway as a family, ending the show with a bang. Watching Akiko walk down the ramp brought fond memories of my hubby Dennis and I doing exactly the same last year. The Guevaras are an amazing family and truly great ambassadors of Speedo.
Among the guests were Speedo International regional manager Harry Thind, Bert Lozada Swim School CEO and coach Anthony Lozada, swim coach Guy Concepcion, Bangladeshi Ambassador Major General John Gomes and Indian Ambassador L.D. Ralte.
Flowboarding
I made sure to stock up on new Speedos for the recent opening of Flow House Manila. Flowboarding is one of the fastest growing of all board sports. Compared to surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding, flowboarding is a relatively new board sport, but already has 70 million participants worldwide.
Flow House is located at Season’s Mall on Molino Avenue, Cavite. The entertainment venue promises an experience that looks like surfing but using wakeboarding boards and skateboarding tricks. Best of all, spectators can enjoy watching the flowboarders while enjoying good food and beverages available in the mall.
For more information on Flow House Manila, check out its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages or e-mail [email protected].
Fun run
And if water sports are not your thing, join the Color Manila Run on April 19 at 6 a.m. at SM Mall of Asia. It’s the first fun run organized by Watsons. The unique thing about the run is that runners will be splashed with colors as they go through the course. (Check it out on www.colormanilarun.com.)
Watsons is the one-stop beauty and wellness shop. It has lots of sunscreen protection products for the hot summer days ahead. Check out its Switch & Save Campaign for more info.
“GoT” Season 5
And if neither water sports nor running are your thing, then just hang out in front of your TV! “Game of Thrones” Season 5 starts Monday at 9 a.m. on HBO, with a same-day encore at 9 p.m.
This Emmy and Golden Globe-winning HBO Series is a passion for many of us. For the April 13 world premiere, HBO Asia brought in a life-sized replica of the Iron Throne, as seen in the series.
The “GoT” Iron Throne will be on display at Fully Booked in Bonifacio High Street until April 23, so go and get your photo op soon.
At the advance screening last week, I was thrilled to sit on the Iron Throne. It reminded me of how Victoria Court provided a replica for my 20th wedding anniversary last year, and all our guests enjoyed their photo op on the throne.
And if water sports, running and watching TV are still not your thing, then go catch a play at the Theatre at Solaire Resort and Casino.
‘Sabel’
“Sabel, Love and Passion” premieres on April 30 at the world-class integrated resort and casino’s new state-of-the-art certified lyric theater. Solaire is truly upping the ante with its contribution to the flourishing arts and performance scene in Entertainment City, Parañaque.
“Sabel, Love and Passion” is the story of a dynamic young woman who loved, above all, to dance. From the depths of her depression to the glories of her personal triumphs, it was dance that saw her through, that helped hold her life together, that, even at the loss of so much, helped her regain her soul.
The musical theater production stars Iza Calzado and the Philippine Ballet Theater, with the special participation of Audie Gemora. Musical direction is by Louie Ocampo, and direction, book and lyrics by Freddie Santos.
Louie and Freddie were inspired by Sabel, one of the most popular subjects of National Artist Benedicto Cabrera, popularly known as BenCab. The musical is a highlight of a year-long collaboration between Solaire and BenCab Art Foundation to present a series of exhibitions and events.
This year is BenCab’s 50th anniversary as an artist, and it is but fitting to celebrate the golden year with the help of the golden resort, Solaire.
The Theatre itself is enough reason to see “Sabel, Love and Passion.” The majestic performance venue boasts of best in class seating and acoustics, and has already scheduled an astronomical lineup of performance artists and events, both local and international.
Designed by Aedas, a leading global architecture and design firm, the 1,760-seat theater will redefine the audio-visual experience in our country.
