Stronger is a dramatic retelling of bombing survivor Jeff Bauman’s journey to physical and emotional recovery

Lionsgate just released a powerful trailer for their Boston Marathon bombing-based film, Stronger. Last year, we had Patriots Day, which showed the aftermath of the bombing, but this film is going to take a different direction.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Baumann was waiting at the finish line to cheer for his then-girlfriend Erin Hurley, played by Tatiana Maslany. Bauman lost both his legs at the explosion and became the icon of the most circulated picture of the attack. The film documents his recovery as well as his struggle to become Boston’s symbol of bravery.

The attack in 2013 killed three people and left hundreds injured. Bauman was saved by Carlos Arrendondo. Later on, he assisted the police in identifying one of the bombers, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, when he said he had made eye contact with them.

Four years have passed and Bauman has now learned to walk using prosthetic legs. He documents his recovery in his book with the same name. Stronger will be under the direction of David Gordon Green. Lionsgate could very well be considering this film an awards contender with its September release.
