Linda Lomelino is very much a foodie born for this era.

She’s based in Halmstad, Sweden, and came to prominence as the all-around blogger behind Call Me Cupcake! (www.call-me-cupcake.blogspot.com)

She’s also the author of the book “Lomelino’s Cakes: 27 Pretty Cakes to Make Any Day Special” (Roost Books). This hardcover contains 27 recipes and very helpful basics for the aspiring home baker.

What’s interesting is that “Lomelino’s Cakes” describes itself as a “look-book of all things layered, frosted, creamy and indulgent.” That’s exactly what it is.

Lomelino not only baked the cakes and wrote the recipes, but also took the photographs, including the cover image.

“It is so wonderful that I could combine baking with my other strong passion, photography, in my first book,” Lomelino writes in her introduction. “Now I can share with you the cake recipes that I love the most.”

So, not only are the cakes themselves impressive—take a look at the Chocolate and Espresso Cake, the Summer Cake with Strawberries and Lime, the No Bake Cheesecake—the images are gorgeous, too.

And the one on the cover, the Rainbow Cake, reflects Lomelino’s complex and visually appealing approach to the cakes, which tend to be smaller (about six inches in height), with piping.

Good thing, then, that “Lomelino’s Cakes” has longer, more detailed, step-by-step recipes. It very much reflects Lomelino’s blog, concentrating on
big-idea cakes, holding the baker’s hand through the process.

The instructions are easy to follow, there’s just a lot of them. Lomelino makes sure you have every chance to get it right.

And it all comes in a pretty package. Lomelino’s exuberance is apparent in every recipe and photo; it wins you over. It goes against the “I’m-too-cool” vibe of cake books.

Lomelino clearly loves living the baking life and shares it with readers, first through her blog and now, the baking “look-book” that is “Lomelino’s Cakes.”
