Commuters might want to take a rain check on their plans for the next two weekends, as the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) has scheduled a shutdown on Nov. 14 and 15, and from Nov. 28 to 30.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) posted on Nov. 9 a public notice about the temporary shutdown to make way for the massive rehabilitation and maintenance of the MRT-3 line by its Japanese service provider, Sumitomo-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Magpapatuloy ang scheduled weekend shutdown ng MRT-3 sa darating na ika-14 hanggang ika-15, at ika-28…

The maintenance work is meant to increase the train speed to 60 kph in December, according to the DOTr. The railway speed was increased to 50 kph on Nov. 2, from its previous speed of 40 kph.
The maintenance measures will include bushing replacement of the line’s 34.5-kilovolt alternating current (kV AC) switchgear at the MRT-3 depot, as well as maintenance work at the turnout sections at Taft Avenue station. Turnouts are the mechanism used by the train to switch tracks.
The weekend maintenance shutdown was previously scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, but was put on hold to ensure the safety of MRT-3 workers as Typhoon Rolly hit the country on that weekend.
