President Aquino pining for love sparks new Cola Wars

President Benigno Aquino III has unwittingly sparked a skirmish in the long-running Cola Wars.

Reports of Mr. Aquino jokingly describing his romantic affairs like different Coca-Cola variants apparently prompted a rival soft drink company to answer this virtual presidential endorsement with a full-page newspaper ad.

The latest Pepsi Cola ad which came out on Saturday enticed drinkers who “love life” to switch from “Zero to Max.”

It was an apparent takeoff from the remarks the President made before the Filipino community during his state visit to China last week, in which the known Coke drinker said his love life used to be “regular,” then it got “light,” and is now down to “zero.”

The quip, a much-applauded ice breaker in a speech Mr. Aquino delivered to an audience of Filipino migrants at China World Hotel on Aug. 31, was a play on the soda’s different variants based on calorie content.

A day after the remarks made headlines, Pepsi put out an ad with the tagline: “Love life? Go from Zero to Max.” It was a pitch for its low-calorie, sugar-free blend Pepsi Max.

So, is the President taking action on the Pepsi ad’s suggestion?

Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang just laughed and said: “For reasons which I’m sure you’ll understand, the Palace will not involve itself in the Cola Wars.”

Still protective of his boss’ after-work affairs, Carandang also declined to comment on reports that actress Iza Calzado had denied going on a date with the President.

The supposed date was the subject of an item churned out by the show biz rumor mill over the weekend.

“That’s like WikiLeaks,” Carandang stressed. “We don’t comment on the President’s social life, so I will not comment on that.”

His critics, however, have given him even worse descriptions, such as his being a “nobody home president,” a “know-nothing-do-nothing president,” a very unpresidential president, a no-track record official, no administrative and organizational skills, a much too slow learner, a vindictive president, a president bereft of leadership and one who is into too much sloganeering, as though he is still in a campaign mode, among other negative descriptions of him.

But he was able to get a credit ratings upgrade for the Philippines in just about a year, which Gloria never did in 9 years. His admin exposed the stinking anomalies and corruption in PCSO suv’s to bishops and Genuino’s take in PAGCOR including the coffee mess, the pabaon system in the military and the 2nd-hand helicopters of the PNP. If this is what other people mean by ‘a do-nothing president’ then that’s quite a compliment already for him.

Those are good things…but still, one can’t deny that after all those exposes, the plight of many poor Filipinos have remained the same. Nothing has changed.

Have to agree. Besides. It’s not like there’s a magic wand where the poor are suddenly affluent. For those who haven’t noticed, Philhealth and SSS benefits are actually increasing because of better revenue generation and good government spending, and better integration of work from government agencies like the new management of PCSO. There really is something positive happening :)

I agree. Actually a lot has changed for the positive. For those who do not read the real local news, Philhealth increased their benefits again. This shows there is better revenue generation and frugal government spending because the government can shoulder more health services for the people. This is also due to better service integration of Philhealth and the new management of PCSO. There’s no magic wand where the poor are suddenly rich. It’s a step-by-step process.

i think the president is doing a great job! LMFAO

What I heard was a joke on P-Noy’s balding head – from regular to light to zero.
If any company is into increasing hair growth on the scalp, then this is the best time to come out with an ad from zero to max.
If he himself talked about his love life and humored himself, then I can say that the president is game into these things. Why should the presidential staff be afraid to join in the fun? Kill joy!
Carandang could have said that his boss will most likely take Pepsi’s advice but will most probably stick with Coke…har har…hair hair

an old man talking about his lovelife on public is i think quite awkward and childish. his age of confusion has passed, he must be decided now on what he wants for his life.
