If beer and wings are a few of your favorite things, you’ll be right at home at Buffalo Wild Wings, an American sports bar which recently opened its second branch in Glorietta, Makati.

It has an Xbox wall, if you want a break from watching games on the HD TVs. But, of course, people go there for the wings.

Buffalo Wild Wings has been around since buddies Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery put it up in the United States in 1982, and has gained the nickname “B-Dubs” among diners.

The branch at Estancia Mall at Pasig’s Capitol Commons is the first in Asia, and the wings have been getting some love from Manila.

Mango Habanero

Choosing your wing flavor can be fun—and confusing—since there are 13 sauces and five dry rubs to choose from, ranked according to spiciness from “Smilin’” to “Screaming.”

For the sauces, general manager Brian Peck says Medium, Honey BBQ and Mango Habanero are popular among Pinoys, as well as the Lemon Pepper and Chipotle BBQ dry rubs. You can sample the other flavors upon request (Thai Curry, Caribbean Jerk, Desert Heat, among others). The staff will give you a few pieces of fries and dollops of sauces as dip.

Peck, who trained at Buffalo Wild Wings Minnesota, says most Filipino diners go for the sweeter sauces. The wings come in sizes from Snack to Large, and are served with carrot and celery sticks, and blue-cheese dip on the side. Up to four flavors can be had for the Large size, which has 20 pieces.

The wings are also included in the sampler sets—perfect for sharing with a group.

Unique siding

The Tablegating Sampler has soft pretzels with cheese dip, pita chips with spinach-artichoke dip, and bacon-and-cheese jalapeño poppers. The Sampler, meanwhile, has nachos, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, and your choice of blue cheese or ranch dip.

Also for sharing is the thin-crust flat bread, which is available at Buffalo Chicken, Italian Pepperonio, Parmesan Garlic and Spinach-Artichoke flavors. Pair your wings with this, or with Dirty Rice—a siding unique to the Philippine menu.

Salads, burgers and pulled-pork sandwiches are also available, but wings are always on the table. Some even dare order the Blazin’ wings, coated with the hottest sauce.

If you’re up to it, take the Blazin’ challenge which involves finishing 12 Blazin’ wings in six minutes without drinking or eating anything. The prize: a T-shirt, a photo on the winners’ wall and glory. The idea gets better and better after more beer, which B-Dubs has a lot of.

Whisky beer

Pair your wings with a glass of Tennent’s Whisky Beer, a strong ale from Glasgow, or a pint of Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, a smooth German wheat beer. We like the full-bodied Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier and Weihenstephaner Vitus, but if they sound too complicated, you can always order Guinness or a San Mig Light.

Peck says all draft beers are served in a special patented glass that keeps them tasting fresh. Other drinks are Mojitos in Black Cherry and Strawberry Lime flavors, Wild Berry Margarita, Limón Electric Lemonade, red and white wine.

If you don’t feel like drinking, B-Dubs has soda and lemonades, plus coffee and tea that go well with the Chocolate Fudge Cake.

Buffalo Wild Wings attracts friends and families alike (it has high chairs and a kids’ menu). On the walls are framed mementos of sports legends such as Michael Jordan and Cristiano Ronaldo, making the place a cozy destination for the sports lover who loves his chicken wings, too.
