There are areas all over town with clusters of restaurants. Maginhawa Street in UP Village is a popular hangout for a lot of students and foodies.
Driving along the area at night, one will see a lot of hungry people walking around looking for a place to eat, or just hanging out. The popular ones are those that have American fare, Pinoy bargain dishes or restaurants with foreign themes.
I’ve observed, though, that there is now a certain expectation in terms of authenticity of foreign cuisine. Today, many know what is and what isn’t authentic.
Another place close by which is causing crazy traffic is The Yard. Located along Xavierville Avenue, this cluster of tiny restaurants serving various food and drinks is packed every single day.
Another area like this but with higher prices is Jupiter in Makati. It’s close to impossible to find parking here. If you know where to eat, there are great finds—Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern fare. Ziggurat along the Burgos area is a favorite.
Then there’s Barangay Kapitolyo in Pasig. Here, you have a combination of many cuisines. Charlie’s Burger and Ninak are here; Café Juanita also has a good Sunday buffet. A new rib place that opened just a few months ago closed due to fire. I believe it will reopen soon. I love the fish tacos at Rub.
Lately, I’ve been craving the food at that new Indonesian restaurant, Warung. I love to be surprised with new food, whether it be local or foreign. At Warung, dishes are new but the flavors familiar. And owners Lou and Tess are gracious hosts. Plus, it has parking, which is rare in this area.
On the other side of Kapitolyo, on 67 West Drive to be exact, is our own Wooden Spoon restaurant. We are in the process of adding more items to our menu. I have developed some that I’m sure will surprise our diners.
Eat all you can
Recently, we added a P375 eat-all-you-can buffet. I have always believed that no matter how wide the buffet is, if the food is not that great, it isn’t worth a visit.
What I never liked in a buffet, I changed at Wooden Spoon. We have a balanced selection and all the items in the spread are not found on the regular menu—items like humba and tinapa paté, bopis, igado, ginger chicken, binacol, lengua, callos, boneless bangus bistek, lechon sisig, etc. Even if you go there every day, you will find a new selection. And, yes, there’s parking!
There are a lot of restaurants coming up all over these areas, all finding ways for us to try their food. My suggestion is to look where there are lots of cars parked outside and check those out. Usually, those are the winners.
Wooden Spoon has two private function rooms on the second floor, and buffet selections perfect for the coming Christmas parties. Recently, we also added outside catering.
