Welcome to another episode of Myth Busters. Today we tackle the myth: Only French women can wear the messy updo.
Surely it is an irreconcilable existential paradox that one country can claim monopoly on the messy updo and the chignon?
Indeed it takes a certain committed nonchalance to confidently venture out into the wild world looking like you don’t own a hairbrush, a mirror, a hairdryer, and conditioner—which is basically most guys, but then again we don’t all have nipple-length hair.
Also I know for a fact that satisfactorily messy hair isn’t an easy thing to do. I once knew an “influencer” who would practically overdose on Bed Head salt spray, just to look like she didn’t care. Was she French? No.
When is the messy updo so necessary anyway? Well, it is virtually the only appropriate hair to wear with your Rastafarian macramé bikini top and Burberry plaid track pants.
How to pull it off otherwise? I guess as with most things in life, it takes a certain kind of attitude, a certain—whatchamacallit—je ne sais quoi.
Myth or myth busted? It’s a tough call. Sound off on the comments, s’il vous plait.
In the meantime, do take notes from Adèle Exarchopoulos’ recent ‘grams below.
