Have a first look at Netflix’s upcoming “Ghost in the Shell” series | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

After “Ghost in the Shell’s” whitewashed live-action mess, Netflix is taking a stab on Masamune Shirow’s iconic cyberpunk anime by making it 3DCG. Wondering what that would look like? Don’t worry, we have a trailer for that.

“Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” is the latest iteration of “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.” In this version, the animated series departs from its hand-drawn animation style. It gets a full revamp in the form of CGI similar to the styles of video games like “Final Fantasy” or “Kingdom Hearts.” Like what The Verge points out, “it’s a beautiful, albeit drastic, change” of animation styles.

In this adaptation, we go to 2045: another year in a world post-humanity. We still follow the story of our favorite cyber cop Major Motoko Kusanagi and crime-solving task force Public Security Section 9. It is still set in a near-future dystopia where it would continue to explore themes of identity, evolution, technology, and the like. As for what could change either in the storyline or character designs, we’ll have to wait and see.

Fans might already have mixed emotions about this change in animation styles. If ever you’re not into this change, at least be reassured that the voice actors from “Stand Alone Complex” will be reprising their roles. Voice actors Atsushi Nakanaka (Motoko Kusanagi), Akio Takatsuka (Bato), and Hirota Takaji (Togusa) are all on board.

“Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” is set to arrive this April. Whether you’re down or not, I think we can all agree—at least, there’s no whitewashing this time around.
