The minute I found out that Karl Roy died, like most left-behind friends I had to literally sit down, stare at nothing, and do a replay of the years I’ve known him. Like many in the world of music, most of my memories of Karl would be backstage at some gig, chatting up a storm on whatever topic fancied him that month.
“I met Karl back in ’89 in Club Dredd Timog. He was in Advent Call, a killer band with highly skilled musicians. Karl Roy was fearless and charming and they would win over any crowd everywhere.
Sometime in 1992, Jose Mari Cuervo left Razorback as their second lead singer. The band was in limbo and had a very uncertain future. Karl Roy was the lead singer of Advent Call at the time. I’m not sure who brought up the idea but Miguel Ortigas, David Aguirre and myself made it our mission to try and hijack Karl from Advent Call. Sounds sinister? Maybe. But, the mere idea of Karl Roy fronting Razorback made our heartbeats race and our imaginations run amuck. We had to give it a try.
We are. We’ve been counting the days until the movie finally opens and we have to admit, we’re getting antsy. We’ve reread the entire trilogy, we’ve explored the website (www.thehungergamesmovie.com), we’ve registered as citizens of Panem (apparently, I’m a lumberjack from District 7—sexy, I know), we’ve tried to take the tour of the Capitol (and failed because we use Safari and not Internet Explorer 9), we’ve had Peeta vs Gale debates, we’ve obsessed over the IMDB page, we’ve watched the trailers, the interviews, the YouTube videos—heck, we’ve even started dreaming about Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson.
Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games,” revealed to Seventeen magazine just how hard it is to choose between the two hunks of the movie: Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). “I think I was [Team] Gale until he started getting a little too trigger-happy. Or maybe first Peeta and then Gale or Gale, then Peeta? I went back and forth. I flip-flopped,” she said.
