Lilly drug chosen for Alzheimer’s prevention study

Researchers have chosen an experimental drug by Eli Lilly & Co. for a large federally funded study testing whether it’s possible to prevent Alzheimer’s disease in older people at high risk of developing it.

British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline will pay $3 billion in fines — the largest healthcare fraud settlement in U.S. history — for criminal and civil violations involving 10 drugs that are taken by millions of people.

US warns of cancer-agent in Japan weight loss pills

The US Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday warned consumers not to take a product called “Japan Rapid Weight Loss Diet Pills” because they contain a suspected cancer-causing agent.The pills, advertised as promoting weight loss, are distributed by a company called Xiushentang and sold on popular web sites including Amazon.com, said the FDA.
