Qatar Airways has unveiled the industry’s first double bed for “business class,” upping the ante in luxury air travel.

It’s perhaps the next logical step after lie-flat beds, a concept that became a game-changer in premium air travel when it first debuted in the mid-1990s.

Qatar pulled back the curtain on its new QSuite Business Class experience this week, showing off the customizable suite that can transform a four-seat configuration in the center row into a single private cabin.

Seats are paired off and face each other, allowing travelers to work, dine and socialize together.

The suite was unveiled at the world’s largest travel trade fair, ITB Berlin.

Likewise, after two years of development, the carrier also unveiled the first double bed for Business Class that allows passengers in adjoining seats to create their own private room by stowing away the privacy panels.

Italian leather seats are hand-stitched and finished with satin rose gold details.

Families, friends and colleagues traveling together can also order sharing dishes for a more social flight.

Etihad as luxe competitor

Meanwhile, last month, rival Emirates unveiled a new, redesigned onboard bar and lounge inspired by luxury yachts that will debut this summer.

The multi-million-dollar upgrade aboard the A380 will feature increased seating, an airier look, luxe champagne color palette and glossy dark wood trim.

And one of the most luxurious air travel experiences in the industry is the three-room apartment suite aboard Etihad Airways, aptly called “The Residence.”

The suite transforms the upper deck of the A380 into a luxurious flying hotel suite complete with en-suite shower, double bed and personal butler. JB
