I know a lady who started a foundation against bullying. She was among those who pushed for the repeal of America’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy. She campaigns against HIV and AIDS. After the Haiti and Japan earthquakes, she did all that she could to help.

This very same Lady was labeled as satanic by a bunch of people in this country. They tried to protest and prevent her Manila concerts from pushing through. They wanted to censor her, they wanted her to tone down the show and omit some songs. I really think that this protest was uncalled for and pointless.

I’ve been a fan of Lady Gaga since 2008. I’ve seen her grow as an artist. Lady Gaga has always been pushing boundaries as a musician, and it is inevitable that some people will not be able to grasp her unusual concepts. However, to organize a protest against her is  overreaction.

Most of the grounds for protesting against Lady Gaga are ridiculous. They claim that Lady Gaga is evil because of the lyrics of her songs, especially the hit “Judas.” You can’t expect an artist like Lady Gaga to spoonfeed us the meanings of her songs. She uses metaphors to convey messages. These religious groups failed to go beyond the lyrics and look into their deeper meaning.

They were protesting against Lady Gaga’s sexy outfits. Yes, they are indeed very sexy. But how come I don’t see any of these religious groups protesting against noontime show dancers?

Spawn of the devil

They are insisting that Lady Gaga is a spawn of the devil and that her concert may cause people to lose their faith in God. But I watched the concert and my faith in God remains intact, thank you very much. To actually believe that a musician can be that influential on someone’s faith just shows how weak yours is.

We all have a right to voice our opinions, but those protests were pointless and unnecessary. They actually staged a rally complete with posters, shirts and banners. They even had tomatoes with them! How backwards! They could have spent that money on more productive things instead. With all the other pressing issues in our country, they chose to stage a protest against an innocent singer.

Lady Gaga has been nothing but good to her fans and to everyone around the world. She has always been about spreading love, equality and acceptance. She has been a source of inspiration for all the freaks and underdogs out there. Being a Little Monster is more than just listening to Gaga’s music, buying merchandise and watching videos; it’s about being part of a community of people who understand one another. That is one of the reasons we call her Mother Monster. She really is just like a mother to all her fans.

We have such a strong connection to her because we feel that she really cares about us, and that she understands the things that we go through. And we have a special bond with the other Little Monsters because of Lady Gaga. I know that our love for Lady Gaga is stronger than the hate that these protesters showed.

Lady Gaga uplifts the spirits of her fans. She makes us believe in ourselves, and inspires us to be the best person that we are capable of being. Now, is that something a Satanist would do?
