BP’s ‘Firebird,’ Red Turnip’s ‘Tribes’ lead 2016 Gawad Buhay 3rd-quarter citations

Only three productions in the play/musical category—Tanghalang Pilipino’s (TP) “The Wong Kids in the Secret of the Space Chupacabra Go!” and “Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-araw” and Red Turnip Theater’s (RTT) “Tribes”—and another three in the dance category—Philippine Ballet Theater’s (PBT) “The Great Classics” and “Filipino Masterpieces,” and Ballet Philippines’ (BP) “Firebird and Other Ballets”—were up for citation in the 2016 third-quarter coverage of Gawad Buhay, the Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts.

Denisa Reyes’ ‘Neofilipino’ onstage this October

BEGINNING in New York in 1987, “Neofilipino” is a platform for Filipino choreographers to make dance the central force in collaborating with the other art forms. Dance artists aired experimental and provocative works that spoke of Philippine contemporary life through dance. This year’s “Take Off” premiers four original pieces by Raul Alcoseba, Jose Jay Cruz, Ma. Elena Laniog, Kris-Belle Paclibar-Mamangon and Ronelson Yadao, interpreted by the country’s leading performers: Candice and Carissa Adea, PJ Rebullida, Jed Amihan, Mia Cabalfin, and the UP Dance Company, among others.
