After years of complacency, and just when the local market is getting more crowded with the entry of some of the biggest global players, Cinderella has embarked on a major makeover beginning with its Alabang Town Center (ATC) branch.
It is easy to dismiss Trumpets’ “The Bluebird of Happiness”—which the Christian theater company dubs its “big musical comeback”—as just another extravagantly fantastical, unrestrainedly colorful kiddie show. When the musical’s first promotional posters were unveiled online some months ago, the central image of two children heading into the bluish unknown with the eponymous bird hovering in a trail of glitter seemed like a black box warning for those allergic to the cutesy, the silly and juvenile.
Cinderella may cater mainly to women, but it is also a retail haven for male shoppers, with house brands such as Clarks and Pierre Cardin, and consignment labels such as Hangten, Hanford, Caribee and Chups Shop.
Originally a TV production, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” is not considered one of the duo’s best works. In fact, it cannot be compared to, say, “Carousel” or “South Pacific.” But it has some tuneful melodies worthy of the Rodgers and Hammerstein canon, like “In My Own Little Corner” and “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful.”
