The message was ominous, the tone ruthless, but the one speaking it left nothing ambiguous. To paraphrase in English: “Kill every last man who does not join us: Spanish, mestizo, Chinese, Filipino. Do not make any distinction. Cowardly fathers will only breed whining sons. The race must be made pure.”
Gantimpala Theater Foundation is once again presenting “El Filibusterismo,” Rizal’s second novel as adapted to the stage by playwright Jomar Fleras and directed by Jose Jeffrey Camañag.
Fresh from his critically-acclaimed performance as the sublime paralytic in “Ang Huling Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini,” Roeder Camañag shall once again reprise his role in Gantimapala Theater’s “El Filibusterismo”.
Roeder Camañag caps his 27th year in the performing arts by playing the titular character in Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas’ ongoing production of “Ang Huling Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini.”
The poignantly silent or subdued moments in Dulaang UP’s “Collection” are what hit you like a fist to the stomach, or make that sense of disquiet creep under your skin. Probably because they are few and far between, amidst endless scenes of bragging auctioneers, swaggering fashionistas, the raving show-biz crowd and half-a-dozen big players who just want to outshout everyone else.
