In a performance season dominated by musicals and revivals, Ballet Philippines’ (BP) production of the dance-musical “Rama, Hari” dominates the 2012 Gawad Buhay!: The Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts with a record-high of 22 nominations.

The year 1980 saw the world premiere of a landmark theater piece by Ballet Philippines entitled “Rama, Hari.” It was a creative collaboration among several artistic stalwarts, three of whom became National Artists: Salvador Bernal (scenography and costumes), Bienvenido Lumbera (libretto) and Rolando Tinio (English translation).

I WAS a young child when I watched “Rama, Hari,” Ballet Philippines’ popular ballet musical, decades ago. It was my first time to go to the CCP and I remember the jaw-dropping experience of seeing its giant fountain all lit up, the seemingly mile-long circular drive, the astounding, larger-than-life HR Ocampo mural.
