We missed Patti Austin’s benefit gigs for Supertyphoon “Yolanda” survivors, but we’re glad to have attended a splendid party recently that had live music performed by a young band from storm-ravaged Tacloban.
When Grammy Award-winning jazz/rhythm and blues singer Patti Austin was asked to take part in a fundraising concert in the Philippines to shore up funds of Habitat for Humanity and help the survivors of supertyphoon “Yolanda,” she immediately responded with a resounding “yes.”
Supertyphoon “Yolanda” showed the best and the worst of social media. In the immediate aftermath, at least, there was none of the irreverent humor that Filipinos are known for, we who make fun of anything and anyone, even and especially our own misfortune. The enormity of the tragedy was such that not even the worst kibitzers on social media had the guts to post any wisecrack.

Jazz singer-songwriter Patti Austin, who last performed in Manila only last September, is coming back—this time in two benefit shows for “Yolanda” survivors: Dec. 29 at the ballroom of Solaire Resort and Casino; and Dec. 31 at the ballroom of Fairmont Makati.
