I am a diehard fan of plays and musicals. I remember lining up at half-off ticket booths in the morning to score the best tickets for shows, and then running from one theater to another all in a day around West End and Broadway.
I was fortunate enough to get cast in Tanghalang Pilipino’s critical hit “Stageshow,” the last and most fabulous play by the late, great Mario O’Hara. Doing the show was both exhilarating and disappointing, though. Exhilarating because every time we performed it, something magical was happening to all of us. It was so irreverently Pinoy and unflinchingly human. And during every show we felt Mario’s spirit watching over us laughing, the way he probably used to do every Christmas.
The chandelier and the candelabras have been packed and sent away, and so as the Cultural Center of the Philippines bids farewell to the international touring production of “The Phantom of the Opera,” it has now opened its doors to theater productions of a more homegrown bent.
After watching the much-awaited “The Phantom of the Opera” in Manila, I was inspired to make my pre-50 birthday party just as epic in scope—without, of course, the crashing chandelier.
It’s half past eight on a Friday morning and Diamond Hotel’s Corniche is busy. The cast and crew of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” are milling about, filling their plates with breakfast treats, getting ready for yet another long day of rehearsals. Just as how daunting weather and dampened spirits are met by Filipinos, for over 130 international cast, crew and orchestra members of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” the show must and will definitely go on—with a season extension to boot.
