A few hours after the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers’ final practice a day before Game 3 of the epic finals against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in this year’s UAAP men’s basketball season, coach Juno Sauler recalled the last few lines in “Invictus” (Latin for “unconquered”), a poem by William Ernest Henley.
Game three of the UAAP men’s basketball finals was decided in a way fans of both schools would never forget—only 2 points spelled victory.
The idea of a Teng-versus-Teng UAAP finals would have been a long shot, at least until the Final Four emerged. The Green Archers were riding an eight-game winning streak entering the playoffs, while the Growling Tigers had to fight for their lives just to book the last semis ticket.
Araneta Coliseum was transformed into a sea of yellow and green at the first UAAP Season 76 finals game last Wednesday, between the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and De La Salle University. What everyone knew before the game was that De La Salle University (DLSU) has not won against Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) for quite some time. In the UAAP, it’s been two years since the Archers shot the Eagles down to the ground. This year was different in several ways.
In a surprising move, the brass sections used by member schools of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) have been banned from playing inside the venues of the basketball games. This took effect in the opening game of the Ateneo Blue Eagles against the National University Bulldogs last June 30 at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena. At presstime, it wasn’t clear whether this was imposed by the UAAP board or the MOA Arena management.
